Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about piano lessons at E.V Piano Studio
Getting Started
Most children can begin formal piano lessons around ages 5-6, when they have developed sufficient fine motor skills and attention span. However, every child is unique—some are ready at 4, while others benefit from waiting until 7. For younger children (ages 3-4), pre-piano musicianship classes can be an excellent introduction. Adults can start at any age with wonderful results.
Yes, having access to a piano or quality digital keyboard at home is essential for consistent practice between lessons. I recommend at least 88 weighted keys for a realistic playing experience. During our consultation, I can provide guidance on choosing the right instrument for your budget and space.
Our trial lesson is a 45-minute session designed to get to know each other. For beginners, we'll explore the piano together and start learning basic concepts. For experienced students, I'll assess your current level. We'll discuss your goals, learning style, and how lessons would work. There's no obligation to continue—it's simply an opportunity to see if we're a good fit.
Piano is a lifelong journey, but most students can play simple songs within a few months and develop solid fundamentals within 1-2 years of consistent practice. Advancement depends on practice frequency, lesson duration, and individual learning pace. I focus on ensuring steady, measurable progress at whatever pace is right for each student.
I draw from classical training with elements of RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) grading and MTAC Certificate of Merit preparation. Every student's plan is customized to their goals — whether that's learning favorite songs, preparing for a recital, or building reading skills.
I provide regular progress updates after lessons, set clear monthly milestones, and invite parents to observe lessons at any time. When performance opportunities are available, they can also help students build confidence and show visible growth.
It happens — and I'd rather talk honestly about it than lose a student who just needed a different approach. I ask for 30 days' notice and always have a conversation first.
Lessons & Practice
Consistent daily practice is more effective than long, infrequent sessions. For beginners, 15-20 minutes daily is a great start. As students progress, practice time naturally increases—intermediate students typically practice 30-45 minutes, while advanced students often practice an hour or more. Quality and focus matter more than quantity.
I tailor curriculum to each student rather than following a rigid method. I draw from various approaches including Faber, Alfred, and traditional classical methods, selecting materials that best suit each student's age, goals, and learning style. This personalized approach ensures engaged learning and optimal progress.
Yes! Music theory is integrated into every lesson. Understanding theory—note reading, rhythm, scales, chords, and musical structure—enhances playing ability and musical independence. I make theory accessible and relevant, connecting concepts directly to the music students are learning.
Absolutely. While I guide repertoire selection to ensure balanced development, student preferences are always considered. Learning music you love increases motivation and enjoyment. I'm adept at finding pedagogically appropriate arrangements of popular songs while also introducing students to classical and diverse repertoire.
Online Lessons
Yes! Online lessons have proven highly effective, especially with proper equipment and preparation. While there are some limitations compared to in-person instruction, the convenience and flexibility of online lessons make quality piano education accessible to anyone. Many students have thrived with online instruction.
You'll need a stable internet connection, a device with camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or phone), and a way to position the camera to show your hands on the keyboard. A separate camera angle showing the keyboard is ideal but not required. I'll help you optimize your setup during our first lesson.
Yes! Some students combine weekly in-person lessons with occasional online sessions when scheduling conflicts arise. This flexibility ensures consistent progress even during busy periods or travel.
Pricing & Value
My pricing reflects personalized one-on-one instruction, the MTAC Certificate of Merit I earned in February 2025, over 10 years of piano playing experience, local performance experience, and the time I spend preparing lessons around each student's goals. The focus is steady progress, clear communication, and a supportive studio environment.
Apps are great supplements but they can't watch your hands, correct technique in real time, or adapt to how you actually learn. They also can't teach musical expression, posture, or sight-reading the way a real teacher can. Most students who rely solely on apps plateau within months. Private lessons build a foundation that lets you keep growing for life.
Group classes can be a helpful introduction, but private lessons allow the teacher to focus on the student's specific strengths, challenges, and goals. That individual attention often makes practice more productive and helps students build better habits from the beginning.
Yes — families enrolling more than one student receive a sibling discount on monthly tuition. Reach out for current rates.
Special Needs & Different Learners
Yes, and I have several ADHD students who thrive at the studio. Lessons are structured with shorter activity blocks, lots of variety, and built-in movement breaks when needed. Piano is actually wonderful for ADHD because it engages focus, fine motor skills, and creativity all at once.
I welcome neurodivergent students and adapt my teaching to each child's needs — predictable lesson structure, visual aids, sensory-friendly pacing, and clear communication with parents. A trial lesson helps me understand how to make piano a positive experience for your child.
Many of my best students started shy. Lessons are private and pressure-free, recital participation is always optional, and I take time to build trust before pushing into anything new. I've seen quiet kids absolutely transform their confidence through piano.
Adult Students
It's never too late! Adults bring unique advantages to learning: focused attention, life experience, and genuine motivation. Whether you're a complete beginner or returning after years away, adult students often make rapid progress and find deep fulfillment in learning piano.
Absolutely. Many of my adult students are returning after years or decades away from the piano. You'll be amazed how quickly muscle memory returns. We'll assess where you are, address any old habits that need updating, and create a path to the playing level you desire.
Adult participation in recitals is completely optional. Some adults love the opportunity to perform, while others prefer private milestone celebrations. There's no pressure—your comfort and goals guide all decisions.
Policies & Logistics
24-hour advance notice is required for cancellations. Lessons cancelled with proper notice can be rescheduled as a makeup lesson, subject to availability. Lessons cancelled with less notice may be forfeited, though I handle genuine emergencies on a case-by-case basis.
Yes! Summer lessons are available and provide an excellent opportunity for accelerated progress when school schedules are lighter. Many students choose to maintain their regular schedule, while others opt for intensive sessions or modified summer packages.
Saturday lessons are available on a limited basis. Weekend slots fill quickly, so I recommend inquiring early if weekend availability is important for your schedule.
I accept all major credit cards, bank transfers, and cash. Monthly packages are due on the 1st of each month, while single lessons are due at time of booking.
Performance & Exams
Yes! Regular recitals are held at a beautiful local venue, providing students with performance experience in a supportive environment. Participation is encouraged but never required. These events celebrate student achievement and build confidence.
Yes, I can support appropriate exam preparation, including MTAC Certificate of Merit-style goals and other structured benchmarks. Exam preparation is tailored to each student's level and long-term goals.
I can help motivated students prepare polished pieces, improve technique, and build performance confidence. For highly competitive college or conservatory auditions, I recommend discussing the student's goals early so we can decide whether my studio is the right fit or whether additional coaching would be helpful.
